Don't Forget Mom

Moms Day is usually, what is expected anyways, a day of hearing “I love you” and “Happy Mothers Day.” Sadly, I don’t really get to hear either of those sayings as much as most. My husband works in the wee hours of the morning, so I didn’t get to hear it. Then I have to scramble to get three little kids and myself showered, fed and dressed, and off to the church building hoping to get there on time. Then once we got there, it was more hustle and bustle to get everyone to their rooms and go about my tasks.

By one o’clock today, I still had not heard either of those sayings. Then a dear lady wrapped me in her arms and let me unwind in tears while she prayed for me and my horribly, busy-crazy morning. After lunch out with my family in a very busy restaurant, a simple hug from my mom soothed my weary soul. Picked up my husband from work and still neither of those sayings from him. I know he will remember at some point today.

Then this afternoon, my crying almost-seven-month-old baby was in need of her mommy. As I walked into her room, all the cares of the day melted away when she stopped crying and said, “Mama,” when she saw me. All the love for my children is summed up in this one little four-letter word. And my kids know that a hug or "I love you" out-of-the-blue will melt my heart every time. It makes it all worth it.

Our Pastor said today that he learned not to ask a mom, “Do you work?” but to ask “Do you work outside the home?” In the new movie, Joyful Noise, Dolly Parton has a line that rings so true, “God gives us girls so our mothers can say, ‘I told you so.’”

Moms are at work 24-7. The amount of different things we do is insurmountable. God made us this way. He wired us to be caretakers, listeners, multi-taskers, organizers, huggable, and leaders. The long nights of little sleep while holding and rocking a sick child are all made complete by hearing “I love you” and “thank you, Mom.”

To my cherished Mom I say, “Thank you and I love you.” To the two Grandmas and Aunt who have gone before, thank you for leaving such great memories in my heart. To my children and Husband, “I’m glad God gave you to me.”

Don’t forget the moms in your life today. They need your hugs and words of affection more than you can know. And don’t forget the lonely widows sitting at home next door to you. She needs to hear it too.

With all my love on this Mothers Day,
April
