After School

My son loves school so much. I could tell the last couple weeks before summer school that he was just bored here at home. He just loves school. Whether it's Sunday school at church (which he still calls school), or visiting our MOPS meetings, or actually going to school, he loves every minute of learning.

He's always very excited when I pick him up and tells me all about his day. Every night last week, he came home with his table work and hadn't touched it at all in school. So we would do it as homework. I know it's just summer school, but I want him to understand what school is going to be like and the work it's going to require. We were great about doing his work the first two nights, but the rest of the week he'd be so exhausted from school, he would crash right after supper. Last night, Monday of his second week, we had eight pages of letter writing to get caught up on. We worked on it all through the evening. When we got done with each page, I'd hug him close and ask him, "would you PLEASE do your work in class so we don't have to do it here, then you can play more?" He'd agree with, "Okay," but I never knew if it was really sinking in.

Today when I picked him up from school, we got home and I pulled his papers and crafts out of his backpack. Not only did I find some stories and writing papers they'd been working on, but I pulled out letter writing pages from today. As I turned them over expecting him to have to sit down and finish them, to my surprise they were COMPLETELY FILLED OUT. I nearly cried!! I ran over, picked up my 45-pound son, and hugged him tight like he was, and is, still my little baby. All of our work last night rubbed off and did make an impression. He did his work at school today!!

Right now, he's reading board books to my now 2-year-old daughter (she had her birthday last week). Even though what he's saying makes absolutely no sense, it is "suhweeet" music in my ears!
